Project Description

In an effort to enable and encourage children to walk or ride bicycles to school, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department offered a grant program called “Safe Routes to School.” The City of Mulberry, Arkansas and the Mulberry School District partnered to pursue funding through this grant program to provide a sidewalk along State Highway 215 to Marvin Elementary School. The City was awarded a construction grant in excess of $80,000 and was able to construct approximately 1,280 feet of sidewalk improvements from the Marvin Elementary School property to West 10th Street. Hawkins-Weir Engineers Inc. (HW) assisted the City and School District in the grant application and worked as a subconsultant to Burns & McDonnell. HW provided design services and the City provided construction observation and construction management services.
