In 2013, Sallisaw, Oklahoma residents voted in favor of a 1/2-cent sales tax increase to build a multimillion dollar City- owned sports complex. The sports complex sits on 130 acres and offers first class playing fields for both baseball and softball. Phase I of the project included four (4) baseball and four (4) softball fields with associated concession, restrooms, and parking.
In order to operate and maintain this facility, significant improvements to the existing water distribution system were required in the area of the City where the sports complex is located. Hawkins-Weir was hired by the Sallisaw Municipal Authority to design, bid, and perform construction management services for approximately 7,000-feet of 12-inch water line. These improvements created a looped feed by connecting two (2) previous dead end water line extensions along U.S. Highway 64 and East Delaware Avenue strengthening the hydraulic characteristics for fire protection capabilities in this area of the City. The project was finished within the contact time and under the original contract price. These achievements were accomplished even with an aggressive design and construction schedule requiring the water line improvements to be installed and functional prior to the completion of the sports complex. The facility opened for use in the Spring of 2016.
